One Instrument, Built for Making Sounds Nobody Else Has
Most synths hand you a fixed architecture and ask you to be creative inside it. Wavescrate Terrain throws the architecture open. Terrain is a multi-instrument and sound design engine for Mac built around eight oscillators, a modular patcher you cable yourself, a built-in sampler and slicer, sixteen effects and 717 presets — a single instrument designed from the ground up for producers and sound designers who want sounds that don’t come from anyone else’s library.
Eight Oscillators, Eight Engines Each
Wavescrate Terrain gives you eight oscillators, labelled A to H, and every single one can run any of eight sound engines: Wavetable, Sample, Granular, FM, Resynth, Harmonic, Modal and Organics. That means a single patch can layer a wavetable sweep over a granular cloud over a modal bell, with an FM bite folded in underneath. Each oscillator lives on a card; flip the card over and the back panel opens the deep controls, including FM routing and phase distortion. Shallow when you want speed, deep when you want to disappear into a sound for an hour.
The Patcher: Cable It Your Way
Every oscillator, effect and card in Terrain is a node in the Patcher, and you cable them however you like. There is no fixed signal path dictating what your instrument has to be. Building a new connection is as fast as thinking of it: drop a cable onto empty space, type “reverb”, and the effect appears already patched in. The Patcher turns Terrain from a synth with a lot of features into a workbench where you assemble the exact instrument each track needs.
Sixteen Effects, Anywhere in the Chain
The sixteen effects in Wavescrate Terrain can be chained in any order and placed anywhere inside the Patcher — before, between or after your sound sources. Because effects are nodes like everything else, processing becomes part of the instrument design rather than something bolted on at the end. Reorder the rack, reroute the cables, and the same patch becomes three different instruments.
CHOP: A Sampler and Slicer Built Right In
CHOP is the sampler and slicer built into Wavescrate Terrain. Drop in a loop, slice it, pull it apart into stems, then drag what you’ve made straight into your DAW. Because CHOP lives inside the same environment as the eight engines, sampled material can feed the Granular or Resynth engines, get cabled through the effects network, and come out as something unrecognisable — all without leaving the plugin.
Terrain FX Is Included
You also get Terrain FX, which takes the Patcher and runs it as an effect. Place it on any track and build a processing chain around your own audio, using the same nodes-and-cables workflow. Vocals, drums, guitars, whole buses — anything can run through your custom-built Terrain network.
717 Presets and Full MPE Expression
Wavescrate Terrain ships with 717 presets spanning pads, basses, leads, keys, bells, plucks, arps, glitch textures and atmospheres, including community-designed sounds — a deep starting library when you need inspiration fast, and a masterclass in what the engines can do when you want to learn. Full MPE support adds per-note pitch bend, pressure and slide, so Terrain responds to expressive controllers the way an acoustic instrument responds to your hands.
