P22 Rail is a time-domain analogue-to-digital clipper built around one unusual design decision: a stabilizing engine placed ahead of the rail rather than after it. The signal is conditioned before it meets the ceiling, which is what lets the plugin hold transient detail at drive settings where conventional clippers begin to flatten.
Three flavors set the character. MODERN, SHARP and VINTAGE each change how the clipping stage responds, and the control set stays deliberately compact: FLAVOR, DRIVE across 0 to 18 dB, TRIM from unity down to −30 dB, MATCH for level-compensated comparison, and BYPASS.
Metering is where the plugin becomes a mastering tool rather than a colour box. PK IN, CLIP DEPTH, CLIP %, TP, TP MAX, LUFS-I and LRA are all displayed live, so you can see exactly how hard the material is being driven.
Latency is three samples, low enough for live front-of-house use. The Immersive edition extends coverage to LCR, quad, 5.1, 7.1.4 and 9.1.6 buses, treating every main channel as one program so the spatial image survives being driven.

Clipping is the bluntest tool in mastering. You set a ceiling, the waveform meets it, and everything above is removed. The reason engineers still reach for it — despite limiters being more sophisticated in almost every respect — is that a clipper does not move. There is no release time smearing the low end, no gain reduction breathing against the kick.
The cost has always been transients. Drive a conventional clipper hard and the initial spike of a snare is the first casualty, because the spike is the part exceeding the ceiling. Push far enough and percussion loses its front edge entirely.
Pulsar Modular’s answer places a stabilizing engine before the rail. Rather than clipping raw material and accepting the damage, the signal is conditioned on the way in, so what arrives at the ceiling is already shaped to survive it. Pulsar describes the plugin as carrying the DNA of its P21 Atlas limiter, applied at the rail.
The ordering matters more than any single parameter. Most clippers are a threshold and a shape. P22 Rail inserts a processing stage in front of that threshold whose job is to make the incoming waveform behave predictably when it hits the ceiling.
The audible result is that CLIP DEPTH readings which would sound obviously destructive on a plain clipper remain usable here. That is not a claim of transparency at any setting — drive anything hard enough and it will announce itself — but the point at which damage becomes objectionable sits further along the DRIVE control than experience with conventional clippers would predict.
Three samples of latency is the other consequence worth noting. That is low enough that Pulsar states it is fast enough for live front-of-house work, which rules out any lookahead-based approach and confirms this is genuinely time-domain processing.

MATCH deserves particular attention. Louder reliably sounds better in a blind comparison, and a clipper’s entire function is to make things louder. Without level compensation, evaluating whether a setting genuinely improves the master is close to impossible.
P22 Rail ships in two editions. The Stereo edition covers mono and stereo buses. The Immersive edition adds LCR, quad, 5.0, 5.1, 7.0, 7.1, 7.1.2, 7.1.4 and 9.1.6.
The technically interesting part is how Immersive treats multichannel material. Rather than clipping each channel independently, it treats every main channel of the bus as one program and clips them consistently. Independent per-channel clipping would shift the spatial image as different channels reached the ceiling at different moments; treating the bus as a single program preserves the image as the material is driven.
The plugin reads the bus from the DAW, displays the detected layout next to its name, and adapts the readout panel to match. Mono and stereo behave identically across both editions.
Pulsar allows Stereo licences to be upgraded to Immersive at any time, so starting with the smaller edition does not close the door.
Format coverage means Pro Tools via AAX, Logic Pro via AU, and Cubase, Nuendo, Ableton Live, Studio One, Reaper and Bitwig via VST3. The AAX build matters here more than usual, because immersive mixing work concentrates heavily in Pro Tools.
One caveat Pulsar states directly and which should not be glossed over: the plugin reports true-peak but does not guarantee it. A dedicated true-peak limiter should be placed last in the chain for delivery. That is an honest limitation of a clipper operating at three samples of latency, and treating the TP readout as a compliance guarantee would be a mistake.
Challenge-and-response authorisation works without a permanent internet connection on the audio machine, which suits isolated studio systems. If you later move to Immersive, the upgrade path preserves the existing licence rather than requiring a fresh purchase.
Place P22 Rail before your final true-peak limiter. Set TRIM to unity and raise DRIVE gradually while watching CLIP % rather than listening for damage — the ear adapts too quickly to be trusted. Around 3 to 5 percent, most dense material is gaining loudness without obvious cost. Engage MATCH and A/B against bypass at matched level; if the clipped version is not clearly better, back the DRIVE off. Choose FLAVOR last, since it changes character rather than amount. Finish with a true-peak limiter for delivery compliance.
Use the Immersive edition on the main bus and confirm the layout indicator reads 7.1.4. Because every main channel is clipped as one program, the surround image holds as level increases. Watch LFE PEAK and CLIP BAL alongside the standard readouts — the LFE channel behaves differently from the mains and is easy to over-drive. Keep DRIVE conservative here; immersive delivery specifications are generally less loudness-driven than stereo streaming masters, so the clipper is doing peak control rather than loudness maximisation.
Against a plain hard clipper, the difference is the pre-rail stabilizing stage. A basic clipper offers a threshold and perhaps an oversampling option; P22 Rail conditions the signal first, and the practical effect is that transient collapse arrives later on the DRIVE control.
Against a limiter, the comparison runs the other way. A limiter has release behaviour and can be more forgiving on sparse material; a clipper is instantaneous and does not modulate. Neither replaces the other, which is why P22 Rail is designed to sit before a true-peak limiter rather than instead of one.
Against other immersive-capable dynamics tools, the distinguishing feature is the program-consistent treatment of multichannel buses combined with three-sample latency. Many immersive processors carry substantially higher latency.
Within Pulsar’s own range, P21 Atlas is the limiter and P22 Rail is the clipper. Pulsar has discussed a combined P2122 Masters release addressing the inefficiency of upsampling twice when both are used in series — worth knowing about, though it should not factor into a purchase decision until it actually ships.

Putting the conditioning stage before the ceiling rather than after it is a small architectural decision with a disproportionate effect, and it is the whole reason this plugin exists. Everything else — the compact control set, the dense metering, the three-sample latency — follows from taking clipping seriously as a mastering process rather than treating it as a loudness trick.
The immersive implementation is the more forward-looking half. Treating a 9.1.6 bus as one program rather than sixteen independent clippers is the correct engineering answer, and there are not many tools doing it at this latency.
Pulsar’s own honesty about true-peak is worth respecting: this is a clipper, it belongs before your limiter, and it does not pretend otherwise.
